Nine Lessons and Carols

The hour-long service of Nine Lessons and Carols finds its origin in England in the early 20th century. There are nine scripture readings (or lessons) that alternate with carols (sung by the choir) and congregational Christmas hymns that unfold as reflections on the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The readings carry us through the great Gospel story of salvation; from the fall of humanity, through the Old Testament prophets proclaiming the coming of God’s Messiah, to the birth of Jesus, the Son of God.
